This week, I was at the newly opened Dusseldorf office of the international commercial law firm Hogan Lovells in the Momeni landmark “Dreischeibenhaus.” PR expert Sevgi Metzger had invited to her City Talk event series. The event was an exciting forum on urban transformation, at which highly topical issues relating to the further development of our cities were discussed. The focus was on how sustainable urban development can succeed without neglecting the existing commercial real estate.

The evening showed that building stock is critical, especially in scarce space and ever-stricter building regulations. Intensive discussion was on how existing structures can be modernized and used sustainably. A key topic was the question of how we can further develop urban space without jeopardizing essential local amenities and commercial uses. There was a consensus that an intelligent transformation that combines functionality and sustainability is needed. The preservation of commercial space can also take precedence over the development of residential space.
