This week, I was at Drees & Sommer in the MEAG property "Westgate" in Cologne. Stefanie Lütteke (Drees & Sommer) invited to this year's general meeting of CTBUH Germany. CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat) is a non-profit organization from the USA. It is a global exchange platform with scientific research and data collection on tall buildings.
The members ' meeting followed a series of lectures on transforming existing high-rise buildings. How can architecture be designed to be future-proof and sustainable? What innovative solutions are there for modernizing iconic buildings without losing their charm?
Lectures:
- Design to Decarb: Circular façade solutions for high-rise construction - Dr. Karl Stefan Dewald, Schüco International
- Kissing concrete gold awake - the supporting structure as the key to reducing emissions - Roland Bechmann, Werner Sobek AG
- RE.USE to RE.VIVE - Circularity for Existing Tall Buildings - Frank Kamping, Drees & Sommer SE
- Urban densification - challenges for comfort in terms of noise and vibration protection - Dr. Christian Meinhard, GERB
- RECONSTRUCTION. Non-stop transformation - Nicolas Pomränke, gmp International
The presentations and discussions emphasized the need to look at high-rise buildings from a 360° perspective to establish them as beacons of sustainable urban development. The focus was on pragmatic, creative solutions to revitalize old structures while at the same time meeting the requirements of environmental protection and resource conservation.
It was an exciting evening about high-rise buildings with many practical examples. My special thanks to Drees & Sommer for their hospitality, whose newly designed office spaces in Cologne's Westgate are an excellent example of modern, resource-conserving working environments.
