This week, I was at the Frankfurt office of the international commercial law firm Hogan Lovells in the "Omniturm" of Commerz Real. PR expert Sevgi Metzger had invited to her City Talk event series. Under the title "The Resilient City," key challenges and opportunities for the design of resilient and sustainable urban spaces were discussed. The focus was on transforming existing buildings, green logistics, renewable energy solutions, and ESG (environmental, social, governance).
One fascinating point was the discussion on the transformation of existing buildings. Here, it became clear how important it is to modernize existing infrastructures in a resource-saving way. This is not only a technical challenge, but also an economic one.
Two statements in particular stuck in my mind:" Before sustainability comes profitability" and "Optimization before refurbishment." These guiding principles underline that prioritizing economic feasibility and the efficient use of existing resources is crucial to the success of sustainable urban development projects.
The event showed how important the dialog between industry participants from different disciplines is for the future of our cities. The balance between economic efficiency, sustainability, and urban resilience is complex. Perhaps it is precisely in this complexity that Frankfurt has the opportunity to position itself as a model city for forward-looking urban development.
All in all, another exciting City Talk with lots of input and impressive networking in the Business Lounge of the Omniturm on the 44th floor.
